Ailey II — the cutting edge of dance in America: The Next Generation of Dance

This February, the innovative dance troupe, Ailey II, will come to The Lyric Theatre. Inspired by the famous African-American choreographer and activist Alvin Ailey, Ailey II was founded in 1974 and quickly became known for being on the cutting edge of dance in America. Since Ailey II’s creation, the troupe has received numerous accolades for their synthesis of traditional and contemporary choreography. Now, under the direction of Troy Powell, Ailey II’s repertory includes over 15 performances designed by choreographers such as Amy Hall Garner, Robert Battle, Jennifer Archibald, and Adam Baruch, among others. In this latest world tour, the dance troupe has added seven new dancers to their group and will be premiering two brand new ballets, Breakthrough by Manuel Vignoulle and Hissy Fits by former Ailey performer Dwight Rhoden. For their performance at The Lyric Theatre this February, partial proceeds will benefit the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church. Ailey II will perform at The Lyric Theatre on February 9th and 10th at 7:00pm. Tickets are available online at LyricTheatre.com or through The Lyric Box Office at (772) 286-7827.
